Most people drive through Praiano on their way somewhere else — which is precisely why it is still worth stopping. There are no coach parks here, no lanes so crowded you shuffle, no queue for a photograph. What there is instead: the finest sunsets on the coast, a beach that holds the sun until it drops into the sea, boats that slip out from a fishing cove, and long evenings where nobody hurries you through dinner. Why Praiano Makes the Best Base on the Coast

Praiano sits almost exactly halfway between Positano and Amalfi on the UNESCO-listed Amalfi Coast, which makes it a natural base for exploring in both directions — and a considerably calmer, cheaper one than its famous neighbour. It is also the only town on this stretch that faces west, a geographical accident that shapes everything from the beaches to the evenings. 1. Spend a Whole Day at La Gavitella

If you do one thing in Praiano, do this. La Gavitella is the one cove on the Amalfi Coast that faces west, which means it keeps the sun all afternoon while the rest of the coastline falls into shadow — and looks straight out at Positano, Capri and the Li Galli islands while it does. Swim in the morning, eat lunch with your feet almost in the water, and stay for the aperitivo. You reach it either by the shuttle boat from Positano or Marina di Praia, or on foot down the stairs that begin near the church of San Gennaro. Bring the legs, or bring the boat.

2. Take to the Water from Marina di Praia

Marina di Praia is one of the coast’s small miracles: a working fishing cove wedged into a narrow cleft in the cliffs, with a handful of boats, a couple of restaurants and a path cut into the rock. From here you can head out to the grottoes, the Li Galli islands where the Sirens supposedly sang, or across to Capri for the day — and you will understand within ten minutes why this coast was built to be seen from the sea. 3. Learn to Cook Like a Local

Of everything you can carry home from the Amalfi Coast, the only one that lasts is a skill. Spend a morning making ravioli and tagliatelle by hand, or an evening stretching pizza dough as the light goes, and you will be eating this coast for years. 4. Walk the Path of the Gods

The Amalfi Coast’s most famous hike, the Sentiero degli Dei, runs along the ridge high above Praiano and finishes at Nocelle, above Positano. Many walkers start from Praiano itself, climbing the steps from the village up to Convento San Domenico and joining the trail from there — a punishing start, but it earns you the whole ridge with the sea a thousand metres below. 5. Find the Churches: San Gennaro and San Domenico

The majolica dome of San Gennaro, and the tiled square in front of it, is the heart of the village — and one of the best free views on the coast. Higher up, reached by a steep walk through the terraces, stands the 17th-century Convent of San Domenico, silent and largely ignored by visitors, with a panorama that makes the climb entirely worthwhile.

6. Watch the Best Sunset on the Amalfi Coast

This is not local pride, it is geography: Praiano faces west, so the sun sets into the sea in front of you rather than behind a cliff. The best seats are La Gavitella, the terrace by San Gennaro, and the rocks at Marina di Praia. Better still, be on the water for it — a sunset cruise along this stretch of coast is, for most visitors, the evening they remember longest.

7. Explore the Coast by Vintage Fiat 500

The SS163 is a road worth driving badly. Touring it in a classic vintage Fiat 500 — roof open, no hurry, someone else at the wheel if you prefer — turns the coast road from an obstacle into the point of the day.

8. Use Praiano as a Base: The Best Day Trips

• Positano — ten minutes away. Go early, leave before the evening crush.
