There is a moment — somewhere between the flour on your hands and the first forkful of pasta you made yourself — when the Amalfi Coast stops being a place you are visiting and becomes something you can taste. That is what an Amalfi Coast cooking class at La Gavitella is really about: not a demonstration to watch from a stool, but a morning (or a sunset, or an evening) spent making real Italian food with your own hands, on a terrace in Praiano looking straight across the water at Positano, Capri and the Li Galli islands.
Here you will not only learn the art of Italian cooking, but the history and the love behind every ingredient.
AMALFI COAST STYLE
Why Take an Amalfi Coast Cooking Class?
You can eat well almost anywhere on this coast. What you cannot do everywhere is understand why it tastes the way it does. Campanian cooking is deceptively simple — a handful of ingredients, almost no technique to hide behind — which is exactly why it is worth learning properly. Get the flour, the eggs, the tomatoes and the timing right, and you can recreate the coast in your own kitchen for the rest of your life. That is the real souvenir: not a bottle of limoncello in your suitcase, but a skill you actually keep.

Our Four Cooking Class Experiences
Not everyone wants the same thing from a cooking class, so there are four different experiences to choose from — from a quick sunset pizza session to a full day that ends on a sunbed.
| Experience | When | Duration | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ravioli, Tagliatelle & Tiramisù Bruschetta, hand-made pasta and the classic dessert | Morning | 3.5 h | €149 |
| Cook, Lunch & Beach Day Cook it, eat it for lunch, then spend the day at the beach club | Morning | 7 h | €169 |
| Pizza & Gelato Pizza-making with a sea view, finished with fresh Italian ice cream | Morning / Sunset | 2.5 h | €119 |
| Italian Dinner with Wine Pasta with meatballs, eggplant parmigiana, tiramisù and Campanian wines | Evening | 3.5 h | €169 |
What You Will Actually Cook
Everything is made from scratch, by you, with your hands — no shortcuts and no pre-made trays waiting in the fridge. Depending on the class you choose, you will work on:
- Fresh egg pasta — silky tagliatelle and hand-crimped ravioli filled with local ricotta. (Curious already? See our guide to Italian pasta all’uovo from scratch.)
- Bruschetta — the simplest possible dish, and a lesson in why ingredients matter more than recipes.
- Pizza — dough, stretching, topping and baking, with the sea in front of you.
- Gelato — real Italian ice cream, made fresh.
- Tiramisù — the sweet finale, with the Amalfi Coast as the backdrop.
- Pasta with meatballs & eggplant parmigiana — the heart of the Campanian family table, paired with local wine.

Where It Happens: La Gavitella, Praiano
The classes are held at La Gavitella in Praiano (Via Gavitella 1) — the one cove on the Amalfi Coast that faces west and keeps the sun until it drops into the sea. That geography is not a detail: it is why the view here takes in Positano, Capri and the Li Galli islands all at once, and why the light at the end of the day is unlike anywhere else on the coast.
You can reach it three ways: by the shuttle boat from Positano or Marina di Praia, by the stairs that start near the church of San Gennaro in the centre of Praiano, or with your own boat (buoy and tender service available).
What Makes This Cooking Class Different
- Professional local chefs — people who cook this food for a living, not entertainers.
- The view — Capri, Positano and Li Galli in front of you while you work.
- Km0 ingredients — local produce, local fish, local ricotta; the coast on the board in front of you.
- Small groups — intimate, hands-on, with real attention from the chef.
- A certificate — you leave with proof (and, more usefully, the recipes).
Who These Classes Are For
Couples and honeymooners tend to choose the sunset or evening classes — cooking together, then eating what you made as the light goes. Families gravitate to the pizza class, because children who will not sit through a museum will happily stretch dough for an hour. Friends book the full Cook, Lunch & Beach Day and turn it into the day of the trip. And food lovers come for the pasta — the ravioli, the tagliatelle, the technique they have been meaning to learn for years.

Or arrive by sea: many visitors combine it with one of the best boat tours on the Amalfi Coast departing from Marina di Praia. If you are planning a longer stay, our 7-day Amalfi Coast itinerary shows exactly where a cooking day fits.
